Description:
Salmeterol + Fluticasone Propionate Inhaler is a combination respiratory medication used in the maintenance treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It contains two active ingredients:
Salmeterol, a long-acting bronchodilator (LABA) that works by relaxing the muscles around the airways, helping to widen them and improve airflow
Fluticasone Propionate, an inhaled corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, swelling, and mucus production in the airways
Together, they provide complementary and sustained relief from respiratory symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness, coughing, and shortness of breath, while helping to prevent future flare-ups.
Therapeutic Uses:
Long-term control of bronchial asthma in adults and children
Management of moderate to severe COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema
Prevention of asthma and COPD exacerbations
Mechanism of Action:
Salmeterol stimulates beta-2 receptors in the bronchial smooth muscle, resulting in bronchodilation and easier breathing over an extended period
Fluticasone Propionate inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators, reducing airway inflammation and improving lung function
Dosage Form:
Metered-Dose Inhaler (MDI) or Dry Powder Inhaler (DPI)
Prescription Status:
Prescription-only medication
Note:
This inhaler is for maintenance therapy and is not intended for immediate relief of acute symptoms. Patients should use a separate fast-acting bronchodilator for sudden asthma attacks. Mouth rinsing after inhalation is advised to prevent oral thrush. Always use under medical supervision.
